Why You Should Take Your Kids to an Orthodontist When They Are Young

Don’t wait until your child’s milk teeth have erupted to take them to their first dental visit. You must seek early orthodontic treatment for the kid when the teeth are still developing and the jaw is growing. Let us learn why early orthodontic treatment for kids is important.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

There are many benefits of taking your child to an orthodontist at a young age. Some include the following:

  • Conditions like crowding of teeth, crossbites, and protruding front teeth need early intervention. When you take them to a dentist at a young age, they can identify these conditions and treat them accordingly.
  • It prevents further development of poor oral habits that are common in children, such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing.
  • A child’s teeth and jaw can be more easily shaped as compared to adults. Once their permanent teeth erupt and misalignment is detected, you can put the braces. Their treatment time will be much shorter than those who get braces as adults.
  • It prevents any kind of development flaw in the kid’s teeth and jaw before they get worse. For example, early treatment can prevent bad bites or TMJ disorders if they are detected.
  • Adult orthodontic treatments are expensive and the treatment time is quite long. You can save a lot of money by getting orthodontic treatment for children when they are young.
  • It can reduce or eliminate the need for future orthodontic treatment and surgeries.

There has been significant developments in the kids’ dental braces from traditional metal braces. If the child is conscious about having braces and refusing treatment, you can choose ceramic braces or even Invisalign. Since they are practically invisible, they won’t resist the idea of having braces to fix their teeth. Moreover, orthodontic treatment for kids is more affordable now, so there is no excuse to not get them braces if necessary.

When Should You Take Your Kid to an Orthodontist

If your kid doesn’t have any pre-existing dental conditions, their first visit to an orthodontist must around the ages of 6 and 7. Treatment between the ages of 6 – 12 years aims at realigning wayward jaws and gently straightening the misaligned permanent teeth.

Adolescent treatment, i.e., orthodontic treatment after the age of 13 is done to straighten the permanent teeth. Parents can opt for treatment at this age to improve the aesthetic appearance of the kid’s smile. Problems like protruding lower jaw, congenitally missing teeth or protruding lower jaw are best treated between the ages of 13 to 15 years.

Treatment plans differ from one child to another, however, the basics are the same. They would wear the braces for 1 – 3 years depending on the severity of the problem. After that, they would be required to wear a retainer to hold the teeth in their new positions.

Consult your orthodontist to determine if orthodontic treatment for kids is necessary. By giving the treatment at the right time, you could save your child the hassles of treatment later in their life.
